Any insights on encopresis?

Chris Kresser: Okay. Next question from Trevor: “Any insights on encopresis? Of course, considering the full GI [gastrointestinal] workup as you discussed here, what additional considerations would be appreciated?”

One of the best, I think, available consumer programs for encopresis is called Soiling Solutions. I think what’s often happening there is there is some stool impaction in the colon and then what happens is the colon becomes stretched, and then because of the stretching of the colon, you can have fecal incontinence. This not always but often shows up in kids who have stool withholding issues, often kids on the autism or behavioral disorder spectrum, and often, probably, there are some underlying GI issues at play or those can develop because of the encopresis with stool withholding because elimination isn’t happening well. But Soiling Solutions is a program you can find online. I can’t recall the background of the person who created it. He’s not a medical doctor, but it seems to work really well. I’ve had some patients use it with some success, and it’s basically oriented around a program of training kids to sit on the toilet to become more regular with their bowel habits and using more gentle, I think, suppositories and then, in some cases, enemas to help that along and clear out the compaction. There are lots of different approaches there. Some kids eventually just grow out of it, but it’s mostly a behavioral issue in my experience.
