Are there particular organisms to look for with the patient’s history of eating sushi several times a year?

Chris Kresser: Ellen asked, “Are there particular organisms to look for with the patient’s history of eating sushi several times a year?”

Mercury. Not so much parasites or infections unless they have symptoms of gut issues of food poisoning, but I would definitely want to look at mercury levels. We’ve seen some patients who eat a ton of sushi. I have one patient who lived in Hawaii on Kauai, and on the Big Island [20:01] who ate tuna and sushi every day, and he had the highest mercury level I’ve ever seen in a patient, so [it’s] definitely worth looking into that.
