Chris Kresser: Okay, question from Trevor: “Can you talk about hyperthyroidism and how I look at this functionally? I have a few patients that have had a history of this and [it] was treated surgically. How do you view this and, if they have had their [thyroid gland] removed, think about hormonal balance?”

Yes. I mean, in part, it depends on what the cause was. Often, it’s just a benign tumor, but sometimes, that can be autoimmune in origin, so I think that can influence how you approach it. I don’t actually have a lot of experience with hyperparathyroidism. If I think back at 12 years of practice, I want to say [I’ve had] less than five patients with hyperparathyroidism. Unfortunately, I can’t really shed a lot of light on what the trajectory [of] that looks like [from] my functional perspective.
