Dr. Amy Nett: I don’t know if I would say it has strong activity against methanogens. Lactobacillus plantarum is the strain that’s in Ideal Bowel Support. The reason we use that is because there was a study that was done in cows that seems to suggest it had efficacy against methane-producing organisms. I don’t know if I would say it has strong activity against methanogenic organisms. It seems that it may be some efficacy in using it against methanogens. I don’t know how strongly we could say that, given that the research was done in cows and not humans, but I think it’s useful and we’re seeing it help people certainly symptomatically, so generally, yes.

Then the last one, “Soil-based probiotics seem to be recommended for everything.” Yeah, I would say soil-based probiotics we use generally because they’re pretty safe and well tolerated. Yes, you do have all of those associations correct. The only one is just the strength of Lactobacillus plantarum against methanogens. I’m not entirely sure, but it does seem to help, so hopefully that answers those questions.
