High Beta-glucuronidase on the Stool Test

Chris Kresser: Simone is writing and asking about high beta-glucuronidase on the stool test.

The best way to look at that is just as a marker of intestinal inflammation. When you see beta-glucuronidase elevated, especially if you have some other markers on the stool test that you’re wondering about. Let’s say, the patient is positive for blastocysts and, as we discussed back in the gut unit, sometimes blasto is a problem and sometimes it’s not. If beta-glucuronidase is elevated, then that can actually be indicative that it may be an issue. It’s one of the ways that we can kind of help triangulate and determine whether an equivocal marker is maybe something that we need to address. But independent of that, it’s just a marker of inflammation.
