[I have] questions about DayTwo.

Chris Kresser: Paula asked, “[I have] questions about DayTwo.”

I’m not actually that familiar with the tech behind DayTwo. Let me just quickly look it up and see if they’re using whole genome or 16s DNA. Here’s my take on a lot of the consumer microbiome testing. First of all, it’s 16s DNA that was used by uBiome, which got shut down. I’m not a big fan of that; there are much better methods now, like whole genomic sequencing. But even the labs that are using the whole genomic sequencing like Thryve, which is spelled with a “Y,” or Sun Genomics or biome, the data are good, but the way that they’re using those data to suggest diet changes or probiotic supplements or whatever, I don’t think is justified at all by the research that we have. It’s extremely complex. I mean, we’re talking about an ecosystem with trillions of inhabitants, and the level of complexity there is just mind-boggling. I don’t actually think we’re going to figure it out, and so we bring [artificial intelligence] into that equation, which some of these companies are doing, but it’s going to take a lot longer to really understand what these data are telling us and to make clinically actionable recommendations based on them.
