Dr. Amy Nett: I actually have not heard of green smoothies causing gastritis. Greens, berries, cucumber, avocado, and chia seeds, I don’t know that anything in there would harm the gastric mucosa, so I’m not sure. I don’t think there are any cases where I advised against green smoothies. The only thing I might say is that I like to have a mixed of raw and cooked veggies, and I like patients to mix up with their eating, so I would suggest some meals be eaten warm. You can eat some vegetables cold. If people are doing a lot of green smoothies for convenience, I sometimes recommend that they cook the veggies that are going in there and then put them in the fridge or even the freezer. I have one patient, and she’ll blanch cauliflower, put it in the freezer, and then throw it into the smoothie just because it’s so much more convenient. But I don’t think that any vegetables or fruits actually cause gastritis. It could be that maybe a patient is having a reaction to one of those foods in particular. But, in general, I don’t know of any specific contraindications to smoothies more generally. If I’m missing something on your question, please do please let me know, and I can try to clarify and look into it a little bit more.
