So, you mentioned things that would cause relaxation of the lower esophagus. Could you give us examples of causes?

Amy Nett: Miriam asks, “So, you mentioned things that would cause relaxation of the lower esophagus. Could you give us examples of causes?”

In terms of, like, I think I mentioned the medications or certain foods that can be triggers. I guess I’m not quite sure what you mean, like, other causes beyond those that were already mentioned. So maybe if you want to clarify and then I’ll move to—you’re saying, “gas, bacteria”—no, not that I know of. Gas could certainly be uncomfortable, but again, I don’t know how much. I suppose you’re saying, like, if it’s a pressure thing, yes, I guess you could have gas causing pressure potentially, like a hiatal—“I read that on one of Chris’s.” Yes, okay. Chris is saying certain bacteria and gas. Good to know, Liz. Awesome. [With] hiatal hernia, too, you could certainly have structural changes that are facilitating LES [lower esophageal sphincter] relaxation.
