And Teresa says, “Thinking of a bunch of patients for initiation and maintenance, have a hard time getting people off treatments when have responded to hormone and neurotransmitter support. Seems like they always need to be on supplements to sleep.”

Amy Nett: I don’t know. I mean, I’ve seen quite a few people who’ve had whether it’s, like, addictions to Ambien or some of these other sleep medications who have actually gotten off, and I think sometimes can be okay without supplements, but there are so many out there, I think it’s going to be a trial and error because everybody’s reason for insomnia or difficulty sleeping is probably different. Bulletproof has a nice supplement called Sleep Mode that has some, I think, L-ornithine, maybe a little bit of melatonin, like 0.5 or 0.75 mcg.

For my patients who really struggle, CBD, or cannabidiol, can be a really nice one. I think those are a lot of my go-tos … oh, glycine, which is an amino acid, glycine, there are some studies around that, that have shown it can help improve sleep induction and may also improve sleep quality. All of those are things to help, but, again, I think the biggest piece is, especially if somebody has had insomnia for a while, that cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia because people develop such an anxiety around going to sleep that I think having some tools to say, “Okay, even if I’m not sleeping tonight, that’s fine. I’m going to be okay. My body can rebound.” Again, in chronic illness there’s a lot of rebuilding trust in the body. I think, push the sleep hygiene, the cognitive behavioral therapy, the meditation, and then just find the … I have probably six or seven supplements, most of them, I just mentioned, that I just kind of do trial and error, L-theanine is another one, Relora, so you just have to figure out what your patients are going to respond to, and you can also use combinations of those.
