What would you recommend for Herx reaction for those who have constipation SIBO who cannot tolerate modified citrus pectin because it aggravates SIBO?

Chris Kresser: Next from Cristy, “What would you recommend for Herx reaction for those who have constipation SIBO who cannot tolerate modified citrus pectin because it aggravates SIBO?”

Okay, I think I see what you’re saying. What [should you] do about a Herx for someone who cannot tolerate citrus pectin because it’s a fiber and can aggravate SIBO? Sometimes they do better with charcoal as a way of dealing with Herx. If you can’t use anything like that at all, then sometimes just rest and even fasting and sauna can be helpful in that situation. Often, they say in the scientific literature, fasting is a cure for all disease; sometimes there’s truth to that. It’s a hyperbole, but there’s definitely truth to that, so sometimes, just not eating or eating a very, very simple diet, some broth and some peeled carrots and zucchini blended for a day or two, can really help people get back to baseline. I think that’s an underused strategy.
