What’s the likelihood that [a] patient’s HPAD markers are highly variable over time? I’m concerned about the risk of recommending an incorrect protocol on this basis.

Chris Kresser: Okay, next question from Ariel, “What’s the likelihood that [a] patient’s HPAD markers are highly variable over time? I’m concerned about the risk of recommending an incorrect protocol on this basis.”

There is a very high, I don’t know if you would call that a risk, it’s just a likelihood, that those markers vary over time because cortisol is really variable. It varies from day to day, as you know. It can be different on a Tuesday than on a Saturday if Tuesday is a work day, which is one of the reasons why the protocols that I recommended are somewhat specific, but not extremely specific because it’s really more a question of identifying the underlying pattern and addressing that, and a lot of the stuff that we do use is stuff that will work in either case, and the diet and lifestyle and behavior change aspects of HPAD support are more important than the supplements in part for this reason, but also just because that’s always playing a big role in terms of what’s driving the condition.
