Dr. Amy Nett: Some of the digestive enzymes should be safe in pregnancy, but you have to understand with a lot of these herbs, in particular, we don’t really have the studies that have been done because most women who are pregnant understandably aren’t going to want to sign up for a study to see whether or not these affect outcome, so I don’t think we have enough safety data to say. That said, a lot of women have used digestive bitters, even things like Iberogast. We’ve seen people using this for decades, I don’t even know how long, especially in Europe, throughout pregnancy. So I don’t know that there’s any specific harm, but that said, it has to be a matter of informed consent if a patient wants to take bitters during pregnancy because we just don’t have the safety data that I’m aware of other than just saying people have been taking these for decades. Just make sure it’s an informed consent and the patient knows.
