Can we wean a patient off PPI by adding some betaine hydrochloric acid to bring down the high gastrin level?

Heidi says, “Can we wean a patient off PPI by adding some betaine hydrochloric acid to bring down the high gastrin level?”

Chris: Yes. We frequently do that, and I think we talked about that in the gut section, and then I also—let me see if I can find the article in question here, just a second. Anyways, I can just tell you about it. I mean, as they are titrating down the PPI, you can start to ramp up the HCl. You have to be very careful with that, of course, and then what will typically happen is as you treat their SIBO and other gut issues, and you start to bring on the support of the HCl, that will actually enable them to get off the PPI.
