Dr. Amy Nett: We actually recommend full doses, meaning two capsules of MegaSporeBiotic daily and two capsules of Prescript-Assist daily. We normally do full doses of both of those when we do the antimicrobial protocols. It may improve efficacy, but one of the bigger reasons we’re doing it is because when you’re giving antimicrobials, you’re potentially decreasing the numbers of beneficial bacteria. You’re potentially killing off some of the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. They’re fairly broad spectrum, and while we think that overall there’s a relatively minimal impact on the beneficial bacteria in the colon, there’s not no impact, so that’s why we provide probiotics while we’re doing the antimicrobial treatment. It’s so that you’re still getting the beneficial effects that the good bacteria generally perform. So I don’t know that it would necessarily decrease efficacy. You could certainly experiment and do pre- and post-treatment stool testing with fewer probiotics, but that’s our reasoning, essentially because when you give antimicrobials, you’re decreasing the good bacteria as well as the bad. They both offer some therapeutic advantage, but MegaSporeBiotic, in particular, offers some antioxidant benefit and also may help to modulate the immune system, so they’re performing some therapeutic function as well rather than just throwing in more good bacteria.
