Chris Kresser: Jessica on the live call says, “For those of us still building a strong knowledge base in Functional Medicine, do you have any favorite conferences that you’ve enjoyed in the past?”
Yes. I think the two biggest or the two most long-standing and largest is Paleo f(x). That happens in Austin, Texas every year. I’ve spoken there. I think [this] will be my ninth year in a row since it started. Even though it has the term “Paleo” in the title, there’s a lot of Functional Medicine there. A lot of Functional Medicine practitioners speak there, and there are a lot of Functional Medicine talks and people that you will meet, and then the Ancestral Health Symposium is another one. Again, the title implies that it’s mostly related to ancestral health, but a lot of people who are in the Functional Medicine space like myself are also in the ancestral health space, so you get a lot of talks on Functional Medicine there, and that tends to be more academic. Most of the people who speak there are in academia. It’s a much smaller conference; there’s a much smaller exhibition space whereas that’s a huge part of Paleo f(x). If you’re interested in seeing what’s going on with ancestral food companies or vendors like SaunaSpace, or pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, or other kinds of innovations that are happening in that field, it’s pretty exciting to walk around the exhibition floor, and Paleo f(x) [is in] Austin in the spring, which is a great time to be there. Either of those is a good starting place.
