If HVA is elevated, what are you thinking if other neurotransmitters are normal?

Dr. Amy Nett: For HVA, look at the HPA axis, what’s going on with stress levels. Metals is something else I think about. If HVA is really high, think about metals. You’re saying other neurotransmitters are normal. I assume we’re talking about the organic acids test here. Remember that there’s so much variability in that test, and so I take it with a grain of salt. If HVA is elevated, think about (1) HPA axis and (2) metals. That’s probably where I would go with that. Just remember the variability on those. If I only see one marker in a category, so if only one of the markers for peripheral neurotransmitter metabolism is out of range, then I don’t necessarily get too excited about it. We still always want to be thinking about the HPA axis, but those tests, the way I’m using them now is more to look at whether there’s a group of markers. Like within the detox category, if there are three different markers out of range, then I’m going to dive in a little bit more. But those are the two things.
