What do you make of the idea that there might be an autoimmune component in the pathogenesis of glaucoma?

Next question from Chi, “What do you make of the idea that there might be an autoimmune component in the pathogenesis of glaucoma?”

Chris: I think it’s quite feasible, and I think in general there are a lot of conditions that likely have an autoimmune element that we don’t even know about yet. In support of that, if you just look at the number of identified autoimmune diseases today versus 10 years ago, that number is triple, and it’s growing every year. There are lots of conditions that we didn’t previously think were autoimmune, but we now understand they are, so I think that’s absolutely likely that that will continue.
