Chris Kresser: Yes. There are lots of studies that support this. One of the primary drivers of gout is uric acid, as you probably know, and insulin resistance has been shown to increase uric acid production, and people with type 2 diabetes have been shown to be more likely to have hyperuricemia. People with gout and high uric acid are more likely to get diabetes, and studies have also shown that when you lower glucose and improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, the uric acid will also typically drop and the gout symptoms will improve. There is a ton of research on it in PubMed if you want to dive deeper, but that’s the basic relationship.
