But what does high glucose in the blood indicate? My husband’s recent blood test had a glucose of 119, everything else all within range.

Dr. Amy Nett:  So of … so first of all you would want to know is that a fasting blood glucose and then you would probably want to look at hemoglobin A1c and maybe fructosamine if you have it. High glucose can be an indication of any number of underlying causes and we have actually covered in blood sugar. So you go to, oh, gosh, it might’ve been week, what was it? Week 30-something? A couple weeks ago we covered blood sugar imbalances. I think I’m recalling that correctly. I don’t know, if someone on the live call wants to correct me. But I think a couple weeks we talked about blood sugar. And so you can go back there to review the material in a little bit more detail but you could think about high cortisol, think about circadian disruption or HPA axis dysregulation.

You could certainly think about other underlying causes of inflammation, think about insulin resistance. So only one elevated blood sugar reading though. That’s just one elevated fasting glucose. It’s really not enough information to determine what’s the underlying etiology and how big of a problem is this. You really have to get more information, get more than one measure. If the fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c are consistently elevated, think about using a glucometer to try to understand a little bit better. And again, you could also do the markers looking at beta cell function, looking at insulin resistance, look at fructosamine insulin, get some additional measures to get a better picture in terms of what’s going on. So probably more testing is warranted and certainly a few more blood sugar measurements.
