The Freestyle Lite blood glucose monitor is available at Wal-Mart, so I bought one since it comes recommended for better accuracy and ease of use. However, it appears fairly challenging to find test strips. Is the meter being phased out?

Amy Nett: As far as I, I don’t know if the meter being phased out. I actually, it’s good to know because none of my patients have told me about the test strips being difficult to find, so I hadn’t heard about that previously. I’m not sure. As far as I know, it’s not being phased out, but again, I don’t have any particular insight into this.

Another meter that I’ll often use is the Precision. I think it’s the Precision Extra because you can do both glucose monitoring and also ketone monitoring. A lot of my patients who are watching their glucose also like to just check in every once in awhile on ketones as well. You can buy separate glucose strips and ketone strips, so that’s another option.

But no, I’ll have to keep an eye out for the Freestyle because I hadn’t realized that the test strips are more difficult to get.
