How do you test for mold exposure?

Chris Kresser: That’s going to be ADAPT Level Three, I think. It is quite a complicated and nuanced process. It’s something that I’m still learning a lot about myself. I don’t feel prepared to teach it at this point. I mean, I can certainly share what I’ve learned, and I’ve learned quite a bit, especially because of my own mold situation and my family’s and the fact that we’re seeing a lot of patients with it, but unfortunately it’s not something that I can easily answer in the webinar.

I would direct you to SurvivingMold.com, which is Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker’s website. There’s a ton of really good free information there about what chronic inflammatory response syndrome is and how to test for it. I had Dr. Shoemaker on my podcast, so you can google “Chris Kresser Shoemaker,” and that will pop up. We talked about some of the tests and what their significance is. Dr. Shoemaker also has a lot of training materials available on his website, and you can become certified in the Shoemaker protocol if you really get interested in that and want to be involved. There’s a CIRS conference every year. It just happened in, I think, October or November of last year, and we sent Dr. Nett to it. I wasn’t able to attend because I was in the UK.

There are a lot of resources if you want to go down that road. One thing I’ll say is that if you’re just starting out with this stuff, it might be better to get the gut, HPA axis, and functional blood chemistry as a screening tool down first before you dive into those waters because they’re murky and rough. Of course, it depends on the person, but I think, for many people, it’s better to master the basics before diving into those much more complex topics.
