Chris Kresser: You know what can be really helpful in these patients, and obviously not everyone will comply, but a little bit of fasting or even intermittent fasting can be a really powerful gut reset when someone’s just really so just horrible. Everything’s just off, and you’re wondering if they can even tolerate any supplements. They’re just not responding well to stuff, and they’re super uncomfortable. Doing a supervised fast—you can do anything from intermittent fasting to even much more extended fasts like three to seven days. Of course, that depends on a lot of different factors—their body mass index and their willingness to do that. But if you’re not familiar with therapeutic fasting, check out Jason Fung’s book, but even something like skipping breakfast in the morning and just having some tea with a little bit of fat or coffee with a little bit of fat, then having a super, super easy-to-digest lunch, maybe like a cooked soup, GAP-style soup with low-fiber vegetables that have been cooked really soft and peeled, and then blended with some chicken, and you blend that into a puree. Then, dinner that’s really simple too like, just a piece of, you know, relatively lean protein if they have any problems with fat digestion. One steamed low-fiber vegetable and possibly a simple starch like sweet potato or something like that if they tolerate that, and you do that for five days. That can really make a big difference in terms of a reset. Even things like a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting can help as a reset too. I’m going to be talking about that more as a strategy in the Academy and elsewhere, probably on my blog and podcast, so stay tuned.
