Do you recommend that patients with one kidney limit protein intake to certain levels?

Amy Nett: Two live questions just came in. Kyle asks, “Do you recommend that patients with one kidney limit protein intake to certain levels?”

I actually do watch protein intake with patients who have a solitary kidney just not to overburden the kidney. I don’t have any set formula. That’s unique for a functional practice. I think you can get various recommendations on protein intake. I don’t have those formulas in front of me right now, but I would say in general, and thinking about some of the female patients I have with a solitary kidney, they’re maybe 60 to 70 grams of protein per day. It really depends on the size of the patient, and what their baseline creatinine, GFR [glomerular filtration rate], and BUN [blood urea nitrogen] are. I kind of take a look at those things. I would look at creatinine, BUN, probably GFR, estimated GFR as well, and I might explore various protein intakes. But yes, I don’t give a sort of free range in terms of protein intake in the setting of a solitary kidney.
