Chris Kresser: Next question from Eileen: “I haven’t seen you mention Genova ION, unless I missed it. Is that the best way to test nutritional status, or is the OAT [organic acids test] better?”

Genova ION is good. It has some really great markers for testing nutritional status, and OAT is limited. I mean, there are some markers, organic acids that you can use to test nutritional status, but it’s limited. ION combines a lot of different markers that are helpful for that, but it’s very expensive, as you noted, Eileen, and a lot of patients just won’t go for it. And also, there’s a lot you can do just with the basic serum testing as we’re going to be talking about in functional blood chemistry. If you’re looking for ways to test nutrient status and [the patients’] insurance covers blood [tests] like LabCorp requests, you can often save them money that way. We’ll be talking more about that.
