A baby, premature at 27 weeks, now 30 weeks. Feeds take a long time with breast and bottle—two hours. He’s had two tongue-tie releases. They’ve seen a lot of specialists. Tried to produce top ups, but he just ends up hungry and crying, so he does this long lazy sucking. Currently under 3rd percentile in weight, so not thriving. Mom is on Motilium to keep supply up. Baby is on iron, a multivitamin, and a baby probiotic. I have started mom on Nutrient 950 with vitamin K Rosita. I have also asked them to start at the baby on cod liver oil, introduce egg yolk, liver, banana one at a time as per the healthy baby code. Suggested stopping the multivitamin and switching iron to liposomal form. Is this okay? If so, what would be his dose? He is currently 6 kg. I have asked them to get proper iron studies done as only hemoglobin was tested regarding the iron. Mom would like to reduce feed time, get him off Losec, and get his weight up. Anything else I can do or get them tested for? It’s also suggested making their own baby formula as per Weston Price instead of commercial brand. Do you know of a brand that’s the best of the bad bunch? He has to be on something or he does not get enough from the feed.

Chris Kresser: There’s a lot there. These are always really heartbreaking cases where we want to do everything we can...

A 39-year-old female diagnosed with Hashimoto’s after first baby—that’s the most common time of diagnosis in women —also tested positive with Blastocystis. Functional doctor prescribed LDN, but she didn’t take it, did a reset with antimicrobials. She has had two miscarriages since second baby. Obstetrician thinks it’s thyroid causing it and advised going on thyroxine low dose. The patient is unsure if they’ll try for another baby but does want to know if it’s the best option or if should she do LDN or the Armour. Open to getting her stool screened again to see if Blastocystis is still there. Currently follows Paleo but include eggs, nightshades, and full-fat raw dairy. Scared to give them up because she loves them. Also wants to know even if she doesn’t have any more kids should she be on something for thyroid considering she can’t get the antibodies completely down through diet supplements and lifestyle.

Chris Kresser: Okay, lots of questions in there. First is if she’s not willing to try —if a patient has...

Regarding B12 supplementation being generally safe, can you think of any precautions before beginning supplementation for an elderly person who’s generally healthy and lean with symptoms of strange sensations and burning on legs and feet and fatigue?

Chris Kresser: No, but I would typically like to see what they’re serum B12 is, what their methylmalonic acid is...

What do you think about combined A, D, and K supplements as the fat-soluble vitamins together such as DaVinci Labs product?

Amy Nett: I’m not too familiar specifically with the DaVinci Labs products, but I do generally like the combination of...

Do you use fermented cod liver oil?

Amy Nett: I don’t. I actually use virgin cod liver oil or Rosita Real Foods extra virgin cod liver oil....
