  4. A 57-year-old male symptoms consistent with SIBO and nonceliac gluten sensitivity that has recurring upper respiratory infections. Recently had pneumonia. He was on the antibiotics for 10 days, ending 10 days ago, and chest symptoms mostly gone except for residual cough. I’m waiting for his SIBO breath test result and recent CBC but wanting to help them and nagging cough. What would you recommend? Raw honey or any other strategies to help ameliorate his cough symptoms in the interim?

Dr. Amy Nett: I really like Natura brand. They have a formula called, I think, it’s lung and bronchial tonic. I’ve found that one really helpful in supporting upper respiratory pathways, so Lyndsey is pulling it up. That’s the one. Lung and Bronchial Tonic from Natura. I think that one’s really helpful. If his infection is over, then you probably don’t need to do too much in the way of ongoing antimicrobials, but if you wanted to do some additional antimicrobials, if you were suspicious based on the symptoms, then Biocidin has a throat spray that I sometimes like, so there you’re not going too heavy duty. It’s Biocine throat spray, and Lyndsey is pulling this one up for us too. We’re putting all these links in the show notes. Thank you Lyndsey. I like the Biocidin throat spray. I like this one because you’re not necessarily taking the oral antimicrobial, which can be a little bit on the harsh side, so I think that’s a good one. Biocidin throat spray, again, a little more antimicrobial if you feel confident that the infection piece is gone that’s fine. The other thing still is sort of having a little bit of a cough. I like Gaia Herbs, and they have, I believe, it’s an aloe throat lozenge, aloe and sage that’s what it is. It’s an aloe and sage throat lozenge, and you can take that generally about twice per day, maybe two to three times per day. There you go. If you go up Lyndsey, it’s the Throat Shield Lozenges. I think those are fantastic, really helpful, so those are my favorites. The raw honey great idea, maybe do that with some chamomile tea because chamomile can also help thin some secretions, so a big fan of chamomile tea with the raw honey. Let’s see. Chest symptoms are mostly gone, residual cough. I would ask him is the cost coming from any postnasal drip. Lyndsey is also pulling at Chris’ article on the benefits of bee products because Chris really likes the Beekeeper’s Naturals. They have a nice honey product that also has some royal jelly, bee propolis in that and a bit of a superfood. They also have a Beekeeper’s Natural throat spray, something like that you can you can also use, so you can use the link from Chris’ website.

Then let’s see, wait, where was I? Oh yes, ask about postnasal drip because sometimes a cough or clearing throat is from postnasal drip, and if that’s the case, then I really like to make sure you’re getting some sinus irrigation in there, and you can use something like Sinugator or just neti pot. I personally don’t like neti pots too much. I just feel like I’m drowning, so I prefer the Sinugator, which is from NeilMed, and you can get on Amazon if it’s a postnasal drip issue. You can get that on, and that’s a nice way just to again make sure there’s no residual infection within the sinuses kind of lingering, so hopefully that gives you a few ideas to get him through the lingering symptoms, and hopefully he gets better from there.
