Chris Kresser:  I cannot elaborate on the functional role of the appendix and how its proper function may keep SIBO at bay. I don’t know the answer to that question. It’s an interesting question. It’s one that I haven’t really looked into in much detail, but I will put it on my list, and if I discover anything useful, I’ll get back to you.

In terms of preventative measures for appendectomy, I don’t know that anyone really knows the answer to that question either, but I think with many of these types of conditions, it stands to reason, to me, that the same things that we talked about for preventing any kind of disease state would be applicable for improving or preventing appendicitis, making sure our gut microbiome is supported and doing all the other things that we talk about for maintaining good gut health.
