I’ll start with a question from Jessica. She says, “The SIBO lecture part 4 in the Week 7 material states we should use North American consensus data when interpreting breath tests. However, the SIBO review pages recommend using NCNM or NUNM criteria. I want to clarify the best starting point.”

Chris: We have recently made some updates to the SIBO presentation and recommendations, and that update was recently done in December. The review page is updated now as well or will be shortly. You can refer to the review page, and that will tell you what has been updated.

NUNM, they are calling themselves now instead of NCNM. It’s still a good test. You just can’t just use generated interpretation criteria. I have not used that ever even before the North American Consensus. I told patients to ignore that criteria. I explained that it’s just an algorithm, and some algorithms are smarter than others, so I would just interpret it for them using the principles that I taught in the SIBO module. I still do that even with the Genova SIBO test. Now they have one that uses the North American Consensus criteria and so tend to use that, and BioHealth has one that uses the criteria as well. They have older criteria, and then they have one that uses the consensus criteria. I think the normal one is BioHealth 900, and the consensus one is the 900C. We have a number of options now, and even if the test itself isn’t using that criteria, you can still kind of use the criteria yourself to interpret the results.
