Kelsey Marksteiner: I may actually have to do a little research on the optimal amount of calcium. The recommended dietary intake is 1,000 milligrams a day, so that’s going to be a little bit lower when you’re doing a Paleo diet just because when you’re not eating antinutrients on a consistent basis, you’re actually going to absorb more calcium from your food, so you don’t have to worry as much about getting that 1,000 milligrams. Then for someone with osteoporosis, I’m not sure if going higher than that would necessarily be beneficial. Let me look into that for you, Karen, and I’ll post it in the Facebook group with what I find.
Follow-up from Facebook: Regarding your question on the Q&A, it seems that 1200 mg/day of calcium is recommended for those with osteoporosis. As mentioned, your absorption of calcium will be higher on a Paleo-type diet when you’re not taking in lots of antinutrients, so you could potentially have them consume less.
